Nathalie Eggenschwiler to Immerse in Textile Research and Artistic Collaboration During Residency

Nathalie Eggenschwiler to Immerse in Textile Research and Artistic Collaboration During Residency

Earlier last week, we had the pleasure of welcoming Nathalie Eggenschwiler, an independent Swiss designer, to G.A.S. Lagos for her residency. Based in Zurich, Nathalie’s multifaceted practice spans textiles, fashion, craft, and design. She approaches her work through a multidisciplinary lens, blending research and creativity to challenge traditional practices and explore sustainable approaches to design.

Her expectations during her twelve-week residency center on two primary objectives, which is to conduct textile research and foster connections with female artists. Immersing herself in Nigeria's vibrant artisanal traditions, Nathalie aims to engage in meaningful exchanges with local artists, exploring the nuances of Nigerian craftsmanship and its parallels with Swiss practices. Through this exchange, she hopes to expand her knowledge and approach to design, discovering new methods and techniques that resonate with both cultures. Approaching the residency with curiosity and openness, Nathalie views it as a platform for knowledge exchange and creative exploration. She looks forward to collaborating with inspiring individuals and expanding the horizons of her craft through shared experiences and innovative ideas.

What is the current focus of your creative practice?

I am an accessories designer based in Switzerland, with a specialization in knitwear and leather. Sustainability is central to my work—I exclusively use deadstock and overstock materials, crafting each piece by hand.

Traditional crafts are a continuous source of inspiration for me, and I dedicate time to studying and evolving these techniques to develop them further and keep them relevant in modern design. Recently, I have delved into the intricate world of shoemaking, a field I am eager to explore and develop further.

What drew you to apply for this residency and how do you think it will inform your wider practice?

I have heard about the exceptional residency program and am captivated by the vibrant fashion scene in Lagos. I am excited about the opportunity to build a bridge between the fashion worlds of Switzerland and Nigeria, fostering meaningful dialogue and collaboration among designers.

I believe this residency will fundamentally transform my design practice, offering fresh perspectives and inspiring personal growth as I immerse myself in this unique experience.

Can you give us an insight into how you hope to use the opportunity?

I see this residency as an incredible chance to achieve two main goals: first, to build meaningful connections by networking and exchanging experiences with local designers, and second, to immerse myself in and celebrate the rich and diverse craftsmanship that Nigeria has to offer.

By collaborating with local creatives, I hope to gain fresh perspectives, share knowledge, and create a mutual dialogue that fosters creativity and innovation. At the same time, I’m eager to explore traditional artisanal techniques, understanding their cultural significance and how they align with or differ from practices in Switzerland. This dual focus will not only enrich my design practice but also deepen my appreciation for the intersections of heritage and contemporary design.
