On Sunday, 23rd April, distinguished guests and connoisseurs from Lagos’ buzzing arts ecosystem gathered at Guest Artists Space Foundation for an evening celebrating international creativity and culture. The special moment was generously organised and facilitated by creative entrepreneur, cultural curator and founder of BLOOM Art, Ugoma Ebilah and offered visitors the opportunity to get an intimate glimpse into the practice of current G.A.S. residents Tunji Adeniyi-Jones, Laeïla Ajovi, Chiizii, and Tobi Onabolu.

Tilga Art Fund is now accepting applications from artists between the ages of 18 and 30 working and living in Uganda, or of Ugandan descent. Applicants are invited to submit proposals as individuals or as a group across a variety of creative disciplines that include photography, painting, sculpture, illustration or multidisciplinary arts. The grant is intended to support early career artists in developing their practice through any project of their choosing.

Interwoven Histories is a convening of contemporary artists Victor Ehikhamenor, Gbolahan Ayoola, and curator and artist Temitayo Ogunbiyi facilitated by figurative painter Tunji Adeniyi-Jones. The event marks the conclusion of Adeniyi-Jones’ residency at G.A.S. Lagos, a period of research, exploration and introspection that has provided opportunities to connect with and draw inspiration from the burgeoning local arts and culture ecosystem.

On Thursday, May 4, 2023, G.A.S. Foundation hosted Why Hast Thou Forsaken Me? , an immersive installation and performance by G.A.S. Fellow and  Farm House resident, Tobi Onabolu. With two showings of his performance, and an installation showing photography and poetry from the duration of his residency. Across video, photography, sound, poetry, and performance, this multimedia body of work interrogated the process of liberating the subconscious mind and the body from external forces of control. With the increasing imposition of digital technology, organized religion, hegemonic socio-economic systems, and cultural normativity on our minds and bodies; all of which are ubiquitous within our daily lived experiences, Tobi questioned what remains of the human's "natural instincts?” 

Earlier this month we welcomed interdisciplinary artist, and Guest Projects Digital alumni Chiizii to Lagos. Her practice spans sculpture, digital, performance, photography, music, dance, and research. Through her work Chiizii investigates the role of art in preserving Igbo food culture, utilizing art as a tool for both learning and teaching and emphasizing traditional and contemporary Igbo art practices in knowledge production and information exchange. Her Lagos residency is generously supported by South London Gallery.

We are thrilled to announce that Laeïla Adjovi, a Beninese-French multidisciplinary artist, has joined G.A.S. Foundation for a residency in Lagos, Nigeria, starting on the 5th of April 2023 until the 3rd of May 2023. Laeïla is a storyteller, photographer, visual artist, and researcher whose work focuses on cultural hybridity, multi-layered identities, visible and invisible borders, and African cultural heritage.

This April, Nate Agbetu hosted Third Spaces, an evening of knowledge exchange, social innovation, and networking at G.A.S. Lagos. Curated by current resident Nate Agbetu, Third Spaces collaboratively explored how we make spaces for culture. 

Yinka Shonibare Foundation is currently recruiting for a Fundraising Coordinator. This exciting new role will be focused on developing fundraising opportunities for two sister charities, Yinka Shonibare Foundation (Y.S.F.) London and Guest Artists Space (G.A.S.) Foundation, Lagos.

Contemporary visual artists, Nolan Oswald Dennis, Evan Ifekoya, and Raymond Pinto, are participating in residencies at G.A.S. Lagos leading up to the fourth edition of the Lagos Biennial. The Foundation is thrilled to be facilitating the artists' experiences of the city and creative processes as they prepare for their exhibitions at the 2023 edition of the Biennial.

Residency partner, South London Gallery is working with G.A.S. Foundation to facilitate three extraordinary artist residencies in the vibrant city of Lagos. Among the individuals selected for this incredible opportunity is the exceptional artist, Chiizii. This collaboration between South London Gallery and Lagos aims to foster cultural exchange and artistic growth, creating a platform for artists to immerse themselves in the rich artistic heritage of Nigeria.

Two weather-station projects – one in Rajasthan, India, the other in Ijebu, Nigeria – are the artist collective’s contribution to the World Weather Network’s climate-conscious initiative.
